What Is an RRFB?
A Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) is a pedestrian-actuated warning device used with marked crosswalks to increase pedestrian conspicuity and alert approaching motorists.
When activated, the rectangular yellow LED indications use a rapid flashing pattern to draw motorists' attention to pedestrians entering or using the crosswalk.
RRFBs are commonly used with pedestrian, school, and trail crossing warning signs at applicable marked crosswalks on uncontrolled approaches.
FHWA identifies RRFBs as a Proven Safety Countermeasure and reports that research has found motorist yielding rates as high as 98% at marked crosswalks, although results vary significantly based on roadway and site conditions.

Complete RRFB Crosswalk System
Zoodico RRFB systems are available in different power and light bar configurations to meet project-specific installation requirements.
Core System Components
RRFB LED Light Bar
Available in different configurations depending on roadway direction, visibility requirements, and project design.
Control Box
A control box is typically installed on each side of the crossing to manage system operation and communication.
Pedestrian Push Button
Pedestrians can activate the warning system from either side of the crossing.
Wireless Communication Components
The paired control systems communicate wirelessly across the crossing for coordinated system activation.
Mounting Hardware
Applicable mounting hardware for the supplied RRFB components is included with the system.

Solar or AC Power Options
Zoodico RRFB systems are available in solar-powered and AC-powered configurations. The appropriate option depends on the available power source, site conditions, system configuration, and project requirements.
Solar-Powered RRFB System
Solar power is well suited for standalone locations where utility power or roadway trenching is unavailable or impractical.
A typical configuration uses a 30 W solar panel with a 25 Ah rechargeable lithium battery. Higher-capacity options, including a 40 W solar panel with a 40 Ah battery, are also available.
Solar panel and battery capacity can be customized for single or back-to-back light bars, local environmental conditions, and expected system usage.
AC-Powered RRFB System
AC-powered configurations are available for locations with an accessible utility power source or where solar charging is less practical.
Because electrical requirements vary by project, please provide the available power source and installation requirements so Zoodico can confirm the appropriate configuration.
RRFB Features & Operation
Pedestrian Push-Button Activation
Pressing the pedestrian push button activates the RRFB warning system.
The paired control systems allow the beacons on both sides of the crossing to operate together during the activation period.
Wireless Communication
The two sides of the crossing communicate wirelessly, eliminating the need for a communication cable to be installed across the roadway.
Standard communication configurations listed in the current product guide include approximately:
82 ft (25 m)
164 ft (50 m)
Custom range configurations
Site conditions and physical obstructions can affect wireless performance.
Automatic Dimming
The system includes automatic dimming to adjust light output based on ambient lighting conditions.
Adjustable Activation Duration
The standard factory activation duration is approximately:
25 seconds
Additional controller settings include approximately:
35 seconds
45 seconds
Custom timing may also be available.
Important: The appropriate activation duration should be determined according to the specific crossing layout and applicable agency requirements.
Lockable Control Cabinet
System electrical components are housed in a lockable stainless steel control cabinet for protection and service access.
Rechargeable Battery
For solar-powered configurations, the rechargeable battery can be charged by the solar system. The battery can also be removed and charged using the applicable charging equipment when necessary.
Remote Pairing & Cloud Management
Zoodico RRFB systems can be configured with remote-control pairing and optional cloud-enabled monitoring.
Expandable Remote-Control Pairing
Cloud-enabled configurations are available for customers who want remote access to selected system information and settings.
Depending on the controller and system configuration, authorized users may be able to monitor voltage and temperature, review push-button activity, and adjust activation duration or applicable brightness settings.
Cloud functions vary by controller and project configuration. Please confirm the required monitoring and control features when requesting a quote.
Compatible control boxes can be paired into the required operating group so multiple RRFB stations activate together.
An existing system can also be expanded by adding compatible control boxes and light bars without replacing the entire system. Contact Zoodico before expanding a system so controller compatibility and the required configuration can be confirmed.
