What Is an RRFB?
A Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) is a pedestrian-actuated warning device used with marked crosswalks to increase pedestrian conspicuity and alert approaching motorists.
When activated, the rectangular yellow LED indications use a rapid flashing pattern to draw motorists' attention to pedestrians entering or using the crosswalk.
RRFBs are commonly used with pedestrian, school, and trail crossing warning signs at applicable marked crosswalks on uncontrolled approaches.
FHWA identifies RRFBs as a Proven Safety Countermeasure and reports that research has found motorist yielding rates as high as 98% at marked crosswalks, although results vary significantly based on roadway and site conditions.

Battery Service Life:
Typically 3–5 years, depending on operating and environmental conditions.
AC-Powered RRFB System
AC-powered RRFB configurations are also available for locations with access to utility power.
This option may be preferred for installations where an existing electrical source is available or where site conditions make solar charging less practical.
Because electrical requirements can vary by project, contact Zoodico with the available power source and installation requirements so the appropriate AC-powered configuration can be confirmed.
Flexible RRFB Configurations
Zoodico RRFB systems can be configured to accommodate different roadway layouts, power sources, mounting conditions, and project requirements.

Zoodico RRFB systems can be configured to accommodate different roadway layouts, power sources, mounting conditions, and project requirements.
Expandable Wireless Pairing
RRFB control boxes can be wirelessly paired and reconfigured to support changing project requirements.
For example, a system initially configured with two control boxes and one RRFB light bar on each side can later be expanded by adding additional control boxes and light bars. Compatible control boxes can be paired using the remote control so the expanded system operates together.
This provides additional flexibility for system expansion, replacement, and project-specific configurations.
RRFB Features & Operation
Pedestrian Push-Button Activation
Pressing the pedestrian push button activates the RRFB warning system.
The paired control systems allow the beacons on both sides of the crossing to operate together during the activation period.
Wireless Communication
The two sides of the crossing communicate wirelessly, eliminating the need for a communication cable to be installed across the roadway.
Standard communication configurations listed in the current product guide include approximately:
82 ft (25 m)
164 ft (50 m)
Custom range configurations
Site conditions and physical obstructions can affect wireless performance.
Automatic Dimming
The system includes automatic dimming to adjust light output based on ambient lighting conditions.
Adjustable Activation Duration
The standard factory activation duration is approximately:
25 seconds
Additional controller settings include approximately:
35 seconds
45 seconds
Custom timing may also be available.
Important: The appropriate activation duration should be determined according to the specific crossing layout and applicable agency requirements.
Lockable Control Cabinet
System electrical components are housed in a lockable stainless steel control cabinet for protection and service access.
Rechargeable Battery
For solar-powered configurations, the rechargeable battery can be charged by the solar system. The battery can also be removed and charged using the applicable charging equipment when necessary.
Remote Pairing & Cloud Management
Optional control and monitoring capabilities for more flexible RRFB system management.
Remote Control Pairing
Optional Cloud Management Platform
Cloud-enabled RRFB configurations are available for customers who want remote system monitoring and configuration capabilities.
Through the cloud management platform, authorized users can monitor key system information and remotely manage selected operating parameters without requiring on-site access to each controller.
Expandable Remote Pairing
Zoodico RRFB systems can support remote-control pairing of compatible control boxes, making it easier to expand or reconfigure an existing system.
For example, a crossing initially configured with two paired control boxes and two RRFB light bars can later be expanded with additional compatible control boxes and light bars. The controllers can be paired into the required operating group using the remote control.
This capability provides greater flexibility for system expansion, replacement controllers, and more complex crossing configurations.
Key Benefits
• Add compatible control boxes and light bars as system needs change
• Pair or reconfigure controllers without replacing the entire system
• Support larger or more complex RRFB configurations
• Simplify replacement and future system expansion
System Pairing
Pair and configure compatible RRFB controllers through the cloud platform.
Voltage Monitoring
View system voltage information remotely to help monitor power-system status.
Temperature Monitoring
Check controller/system temperature information remotely.
Flash Duration Adjustment
Remotely adjust RRFB activation duration based on project and operating requirements.
