What Is an Internally Illuminated Traffic Sign?
An internally illuminated traffic sign contains a light source inside the sign enclosure. Light passes through translucent sign-face material to illuminate a word legend, symbol, background, or selected portion of the sign.
Because the light source is behind the face, this design normally produces a smoother and more uniform nighttime appearance than visible individual LED points. A photocell can switch the sign into its nighttime mode or adjust brightness as ambient light changes.

Can Both Technologies Be Combined?
Yes. A sign can use internal illumination together with visible perimeter LEDs. Internal lighting improves recognition of the legend or symbol, while the perimeter LEDs provide active emphasis.
A combined configuration can also use separate day and night modes. For example, the perimeter LEDs may operate during the day, while the legend is internally illuminated after dark with optional perimeter flashing. The permitted mode depends on the sign type and the responsible agency's requirements.
Combined systems consume more energy and require more complex controls. For a solar-powered sign, the battery and solar panel should be sized for the internal illumination, perimeter LEDs, controller load, operating hours, expected activations, local temperature, and seasonal sunlight conditions.
MUTCD Considerations
The current federal MUTCD treats visible LED conspicuity enhancement differently from illumination located behind a fixed sign face.
LED Units in a Sign Border, Legend, or Symbol
Section 2A.12 addresses individual LED units used to enhance a standard sign. Important requirements include:
• The underlying sign must still satisfy applicable requirements for retroreflection and nighttime viewing.
• LED color and placement must be appropriate for the sign category.
• When flashed, the LEDs generally must flash simultaneously at a steady rate of 50 to 60 times per minute.
• Sequential, chasing, dancing, or variable flash patterns are not allowed unless another MUTCD provision specifically permits them.
• Automatic dimming must prevent excessive LED brightness from reducing the visibility of the sign legend.
Light Located Behind the Sign Face
Section 2A.21 and Table 2A-3 recognize light behind a sign face as a method of illuminating a symbol, word message, background, or combination through translucent material. The sign must continue to show the prescribed shape and similar color by day and night.
A fixed legend illuminated from behind should not be confused with an electronic display that creates, changes, or extinguishes the message. Depending on its design and operation, that type of display may instead be treated as a changeable message sign or blank-out sign.
Special Rules for STOP and YIELD Signs
STOP and YIELD signs have an important restriction: when visible LED units in the sign legend or border are flashed, they must operate continuously. The flashing LEDs cannot be turned on only by a push button, radar detector, or other actuation.
For a combined STOP or YIELD configuration, a conservative approach is to maintain a compliant retroreflective face, use steady internal illumination at night, operate flashing border LEDs continuously at the required simultaneous flash rate, and provide automatic nighttime dimming. Final design and operation should be confirmed with the responsible roadway agency.
Which Type Should You Choose?
Choose an LED-Enhanced Sign When:

• Lower power consumption is important for a solar installation.
• Push-button or radar activation is needed for an applicable sign.
